Activator Method

A low-force adjustment delivered by a small hand-held instrument — no twisting, no turning, no cracking. At our Langford clinic the Activator lets us treat infants, pregnant patients, older patients and acutely painful joints with precision and comfort.

Benefits of the Activator Method

Low force

A fraction of the pressure of a manual adjustment, with the same intent.

No twisting

Your spine is not rotated or stretched to set up the adjustment.

Highly targeted

The impulse goes into one joint at a time rather than a whole region.

Safe for all ages

From newborns through to patients with osteoporosis or joint replacements.

Comfortable in acute pain

Useful when a joint is too guarded and painful to move by hand.

Nervous system focus

Precise, low-force input to the spine supports how your nervous system and body communicate.

What is the Activator Method?

The Activator is a small spring-loaded instrument that delivers a single, precisely aimed impulse into a joint. The thrust is very light and extremely fast — faster than the surrounding muscles can tense against — so the joint moves without the practitioner needing to apply body weight or rotate your spine. It is one of the most widely researched instrument-based techniques in chiropractic.

No cracking

Because there is no twisting or stretching of the joint, there is usually no popping sound. Patients who dislike the sensation of manual adjusting often prefer it.

What does it feel like?

Most people describe a light tap or a quick thud, and nothing more. There is no build-up of pressure and no sense of being held or turned, so there is very little to brace against. The adjustment itself takes a fraction of a second, and you can be treated seated, side-lying or face-down — whichever position is comfortable for you.

Your first visit

We assess first and explain what we have found before adjusting anything. If the Activator is the right tool for your presentation, we will tell you why.

Who is it for?

The Activator is our default where a manual adjustment is not appropriate: newborns and young children, pregnancy, older patients, osteoporosis, joint replacements, and joints that are too acutely painful and guarded to move by hand. It is also well suited to the smaller joints — hands, feet, ribs and jaw — where a manual adjustment is difficult to apply precisely. And it is there for anyone who would simply rather not be adjusted by hand.
